School bus seat reupholstery NYC: rows of bench seats recovered in new brown vinyl inside a school bus
For districts & bus contractors

A Cut Seat Is an Inspection Item

On a school bus the seat is safety equipment, so a slash through the vinyl is a write-up, not a cosmetic job. School bus seat reupholstery puts the bench back the way the inspector expects it.

Why the cover matters

The Seat Is Part of the Safety System

Children on a school bus are protected by the seat in front of them, not by a belt. That is why a torn cover and crushed foam are a real defect, and why transportation work on these seats is specified differently from a coach.

The padded back

What the child behind hits

The back panel is padding, so foam that has collapsed is not a comfort problem. Every bench we open is checked before it is recovered.

Transportation-grade vinyl

Seat vinyl for buses is a specified material, not furniture goods. We order it by the roll so a whole fleet stays one color. Inspection standards for school buses are set by NYSDOT.

Eight Ways a Bench Fails

School bus seats rarely wear out. They get cut, burned, written on and kicked, and each ends the same way: foam showing, and the bench on the list for school bus seat reupholstery.

Recovered While the Routes Are Stopped

School bus seat reupholstery runs on the school calendar. Buses come out of service when term ends, and the fleet goes back before the first route in September.

Off the Track and Back in the Row

One slashed bench through school bus seat reupholstery in eight moves. The floor track, the anchors and the bus itself are never altered.

  1. 01Off the track

The bench comes out on its own bolts. The floor track and anchors are not touched.

  2. 02Cover off

Hog rings are cut and the old cover comes off in one piece, so it can be used as the pattern.

  3. 03Foam checked

Crushed foam is cut out and replaced. The padding is part of what the seat is for. Foam replacement.

  4. 04Cut to pattern

  5. 05Sewn

Panels are joined in heavy bonded thread, which is what usually fails first on a school run. Seam work.

The cover is pulled down over the foam so there is no slack for a shoe to catch.

Eight Positions, One Fleet Color

A bus is not one seat repeated. Each position comes apart differently, and school bus seat reupholstery has to leave all of them the same color.

What it is made of

The Cover, the Thread, the Rings

Three parts decide how long a recovered bench lasts on a route, and none of them is the color.

How a fleet runs through

Your Buses Stay in the Yard

School bus seat reupholstery is a seat job, not a bus job. Nothing is driven anywhere for it.

We come to the yard

Benches are counted and pulled at your depot, so no bus is moved twice. On-site work.

Questions

What Transport Directors Ask

What does school bus seat reupholstery cost?

School bus seat reupholstery is quoted per seat, and the price drops as the count goes up because the covers are cut in batches. Send photos and a seat count for a free estimate.

Can you do it over the summer?

That is when most of it happens. Buses come out of service in June and go back before September. Out of term we work bus by bus. See bulk projects.

Do the seats have to leave the yard?

The benches do, the buses do not. We unbolt and take the seats, and the bus stays where it is. See pickup and delivery.

What vinyl do you use?

Transportation-grade vinyl specified for bus seating, ordered in one dye lot per fleet so every bench matches. See commercial vinyl.

Can you repair one slash instead of recovering the seat?

Sometimes, when the cut is small and away from a seam. A cut through a panel usually means a new cover. See bus seat repair.

Do you work for contractors as well as districts?

Yes, and for the mixed fleets contractors run. See fleet reupholstery and certificate of insurance.
