Home/Upholstery

Upholstery NYC: a leather sofa, a fabric armchair and a vinyl booth section in the workshop

Not everything that looks like leather is.

Upholstery NYC for homes and businesses. We name the cover first, because that decides whether a piece is repaired, recoloured or recovered.

Start here

Upholstery NYC: four families

Hide takes dye. Bonded peels. Vinyl welds. Fabric is replaced.
How we tell

Four checks, done in your room

No lab. All four on the first visit, before any number.
Leather grain standing up under light from one side
Raking Light
Cut edge of a cover showing backing cloth under a thin surface
The Cut Edge
Underside of a cover panel showing its woven backing
The Underside
Worn sofa arm with a different colour showing underneath
Worn Areas

Natural grain wanders and printed grain repeats. A cut edge shows colour through, or a skin over cloth. A woven back means it is not hide. Wear exposes whatever the surface was hiding.

What it changes

The answer picks the route

Same sofa, three quotes.
Seam being restitched on a sound leather sofa
Repair
Sofa panel part way through recolouring, old and new both visible
Recolour
New cover going onto an armchair frame in the workshop
Recover
One

Repair

The cover is sound and the damage is local. We work that area and blend it back.

Two

Recolour

Hide only. Bonded and vinyl will not hold a new colour coat.

Three

Recover

A new cover on the old frame. Worth it when the frame is sound.

Where it lives

The room sets the specification

A cover that suits a living room fails in a waiting room.

How it runs

Two photographs, then a number

Questions

Upholstery NYC questions

How do I know if my sofa is real leather?

Look at a cut edge or the underside. Hide carries colour right through and its grain never repeats. Bonded is a skin on cloth, so wear shows cloth.

Can bonded leather be repaired?

Patched sometimes. Recoloured no, because the surface is already lifting off its backing. Once it peels in sheets the answer is a new cover.

Is reupholstery worth it on an old piece?

It depends on the frame, not the cover. A hardwood frame with sound joints is worth recovering. We open a seam and look.

Do you work on site or take the piece away?

Both. Small repairs and colour work happen in your room. A full recover goes to the workshop; fixed seating is worked overnight.

Do you match an existing cover?

We bring samples and judge them in your light. Where an exact match is impossible we say so before cutting.
